Hair Loss in Women

You wake up in the morning and discover hair on your pillow. When you brush your hair you find the brush becoming full of hair strands faster than ever before and you start to notice that you can see your scalp in places you never could. What causes female hair loss? Can anything be done to slow or even reverse the loss of hair in women?

The onset of hair loss in women generally differs from hair loss in men. When women begin to lose their hair the condition is discovered when hair is becoming thinner everywhere on the head, not in a receding hairline as on men.

What Causes Women's Hair Loss
To answer this most common question, let’s look first at the rather simple life cycle of a hair follicle. A single hair follicle will grow for around 2 to 5 years. This period of growth is known as the anagen phase. Once this phase is complete the hair will then be dormant for around 4-6 months. This is known as the telogen phase. Eventually the follicle will reenter the anegen phase and a new hair will grow at a rate of around 1/8” a week and eventually replace the old hair. Normally, around 90% of your hair is in the anagen phase, and 10% is in the telogen phase. If you are noticing thinner hair then this process has been interrupted or significantly delayed, but why?

Hormonal Changes
Hormonal changes are a common cause of hair loss. A hormone change can after occur after pregnancy or when changing or discontinuing birth control pills.

Dietary Considerations
Female hair loss may occur as a result of weight loss programs that significantly reduce protein and iron in your diet. Monitoring your vitamin intake during this time may help prevent this.

Other Possible Factors
High fever, a thyroid condition, diabetes and chemotherapy treatments are among the many reasons that may cause hair loss in women.
